Teacher Twilight Session – Inclusive Books
The second Continuing Professional Development (CPD) session of the Futureland project—delivered in collaboration with Words of Colour and Theatre Peckham—was led by librarian and inclusive literature advocate Janet Noble. The session focused on anti-racism and inclusive storytelling, offering teachers the opportunity to explore how diverse children’s books can be powerful tools for fostering equity, empathy, and belonging in the classroom.
Janet introduced a rich selection of titles that reflect a wide range of voices, cultures, and experiences. She emphasised the importance of authentic representation in children’s literature—not only so young readers can see themselves reflected, but also to help all students engage more deeply with the world around them.
Teachers were encouraged to explore these books hands-on and consider how to weave them meaningfully into their teaching practice. The session opened up thoughtful discussions around race, identity, and the role of literature in shaping inclusive and engaging learning environments.
This CPD supported Futureland’s wider aim to champion literacy, oracy, and reading for pleasure, while increasing representation for young people. By centring imagination and inclusion, the project empowers educators to create classrooms where every child feels seen, heard and inspired to learn.
