Friendship with DD Armstrong

10 minutes

DD talks about doing workshops with young black boys in the school, having an unorthodox introduction to literature and reading, and explaining why he calls himself a ‘griot’.

In Ugly Dogs Don’t Cry, the main character forms deep, loyal connections with others who are also struggling or seen as outsiders. These friendships show what it means to have someone who stands by you no matter what—a true “ride-or-die” friend. Through challenges, fights, and moments of pain, the characters support each other and prove that real friendship isn’t about being perfect; it’s about being there when it matters most. The story shows that even people who feel broken or rejected can find strength through the loyalty and love of close friends. Just like ride-or-die friendships in real life, the friendships in this book are about trust, survival, and sticking together through everything.

Activity

You might be at school with people you’ve known since primary school, or you could be in a completely new environment, surrounded by faces that only got to know you in Year 7 or later. Take a moment to reflect on the friendships you have now. Are they the same as they were when you were younger—whether that’s five years ago or even just at the start of this year? How have those relationships grown or changed?

Now, think of someone you know will always have your back, even when you don’t see eye to eye. Write down their name.

Finally, come up with a simple way to show them that you appreciate them—whether it’s a kind message, a thoughtful gesture, or just spending time together.
